The 2-year practice-oriented study course is providing students with a background in either design, architecture, informatics or engineering a contemporary transmedial interaction design framework.
In the age of digital networking, we regularly cross the border between physical space and digital space. In the future, these boundaries will increasingly dissolve and mutate. This development implies great changes in our perception and thus also in our interactions and in our behaviour. Space becomes transmedial and changes into a medium that can be read, understood and also lived and experienced.
The master program «Transmedia Interaction and Space» pursues a practical, experimental and critical approach with the latest theoretical, technical and scientific developments. Program priorities include: «spatial interaction», «performative space», «transmedia storytelling», «socio-technological interaction».
The trans-disciplinary programme, therefore, will experiment with the reciprocal influences between communication, narration, interaction, technology and society, explored through designing projects in digital and physical space. This programme brings together experience, diverse media, space, journalism and coding, providing students with a transdisciplinary education to make new sense of design ‘things’, to open debates, to raise awareness, to inform, and to lead reflections through the design of new digital and analogue experiences that critically approach societal issues.
As a graduate of this programme you will become an interaction designer, able to handle transdisciplinary projects in the digital and physical space, dealing confidently with graphics, media, objects, and space. You will be able to work both freelance as well as in public and private institutions and organizations such as multi-media companies, museums, design firms, architecture and spatial planning studios, companies specializing in app and web design, media arts and experience design.
In the first semester, you will attend a series of 'foundation courses' and practice orientation seminars, during which you will familiarise yourself with a practical approach to interaction design, spacial design and the foundations of computer science for designers.
In the following two semesters, you'll be able to work in two projects in the field of trans-disciplinary interaction design dealing with spatial interactions, performative space, transmedia storytelling, socio-technological interaction, cross-media branding and interactive data visualisation.
The projects of the second and third semester involve groups of 15 to a maximum of 30 students. Besides projects, lectures and seminars, theoretical courses in subjects like User Research, Critical Media Studies, Service Design, Lean Entrepreneurship, Globalisation and Transcultural Practices will provide you with the necessary theoretical background required to sharpen your critical thinking.
In the fourth and last semester, you will focus on your thesis project and the written thesis. While working on your thesis, you will focus on a specific research topic. You will work independently albeit under the supervision of the thesis supervisors. Through the thesis work, you will be able to apply the knowledge and techniques you gained throughout the programme. The final product is a written thesis report stating the main results of your research. You will also be given the opportunity to present and discuss their results regularly during the thesis semester symposiums.
